The teens in the Rise Above Arts Program have published their first zine!
Titled Our World: A mile in our shoes, the zine includes poetry, short stories, and artwork created by the youths at A Safe Place for Youth, a teen homeless shelter run by the Boys and Girls Aid Society.
Heartfelt, funny, sad, and often poignant, the work by these teens truly gives the reader a window into “their world,” detailing the hardships and triumphs of love, friendship, and family, as well insights into life and moral lessons learned along the way. Prints, collages, paintings, and other forms of art intermix with the poetry and writings, giving the reader further understanding about their world.
Our World is being sold for $2.00 (plus $1.00 shipping & handling if necessary). All proceeds going back into Rise Above to help create more zines. If you would like to purchase a copy of Our World, please contact Katie Hill at teensriseabove@yahoo.com.
Second Annual Rise Above Art & Writing Exhibit
Please join us for the Second Annual Rise Above Art & Writing Exhibit at the Walters Cultural Art Center from March 3rd to 31st. On opening night, (First Tuesday) there will be a reception at 6:30, with refreshments provided.
The Walters Cultural Art Center will be celebrating its fifth anniversary, so there will also be music, art demonstrations, and other events taking place for the whole family to enjoy. Also, look for copies of the first Rise Above zine, titled Our World. It contains the poetry, short stories, and artwork of the teens in the Rise Above Program and showcases all of their hard work. Please join us in celebrating all of the teens' work and show your support by coming to opening night on March 3rd.

A Call to Area Artists - Seeking Donations
We have an opportunity to raise money for both Rise Above and the Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals (OFOSA) and we need your art donations!
OFOSA will be holding the auction on March 28, 2009.
Estate Sales Unlimited, located at 6585 NW Cornelius Pass Road in Hillsboro, is donating the venue and its auction experience, personnel and equipment. For all items donated in the HCA’s Rise Above name, 50% of proceeds will go to Rise Above and 50% to OFOSA.
The mission of Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals (“OFOSA”) is to improve the living conditions and adoptability of shelter animals. OFOSA is a unique nonprofit organization providing community assistance, rescue, and support to shelters that are financially challenged to provide care because of the overwhelming demand in this country to care for homeless animals. It provides shelter support through veterinary services, medical supplies, food, grooming services, and animal spay and neuter programs. It also provides community assistance through equipment and supplies, Senior Smiles Program, disaster relief, animal abuse urgent care and support to area rescues. Additionally, it provides rescue through a foster care network, animal rehabilitation, and adoptions.
This auction event will be one of OFOSA’s largest fundraising endeavors of the year, and we appreciate your support and art work to be auctions. We expect to attract 400 participants. For more information on how to donate, contact Liz at hillsborocommunityarts@gmail.com.
